HUSBAND and wife team Phil and Jo Hyde combine being Professional Anglers’ Association coaches with teaching around the world and permanent day jobs.
But that hasn’t stopped them developing good ties with Adrian Pearce and the lads at Torbay Angling, as well as several trout fisheries.
Jo is a senior librarian for Devon Schools Library Service and Phil works part-time in the National Laboratory Service of the Environment Agency as a science technologist, as well as
custom-building, modifying and repairing fishing rods.
The pair have been coaching since before they were married in 1978 and two years later Phil was appointed as casting instructor for a national sea angling magazine. Jo was awarded the same status earlier this year.
In that time Phil has taught both in person and through a series of instructional videos made in the 1990s.
The duo moved to Teignmouth, Devon, in 1981, where Phil started his rod-building business, SW Tackle Developments.
Phil and Jo are acknowledged internationally for their sea angling instruction and have coached in Australia and the United States, where they currently have five separate invitations to return.
Their only problem is how to fit it all in, with the diary already half-full with PAA, National Federation of Sea Anglers, National Fishing Week, Professional Coaching Development and several other weekend events!
This is before they fit in their permanent jobs. Since joining the association in 2002 after becoming licensed level 2 JAGB (now JADB) sea and, in Phil’s case, game coaches the first from these spheres to sign up they have made many hundreds into better anglers as a result.
