DAVID LLOYD is not only a fully qualified PAA coach - and has been for the past three years - but he is also an official assessor for the venture, ensuring standards are maintained.

As well as being a member of his local fishing club, David has also forged close ties with another fishery in the area and uses it for one-to-one and group tuition, boosting the water's profile in the proces.

He began fishing as a school boy but drifted away during his teens, only returning to his hobby once he had left the armed forces and moved back to fleetwood, where he joined his local club.

David loves his fishing so much that he was keen to put something back into the sport and he remembered his humble beginnings and how he would have benefitted from someone offering him advice and coaching.

He explained "I learnt to fish by watching adults at local waters but none of them actually gave me the time of day or offered me any advice."

"I wanted to become a coach to ensure that I could pass on the relevant skills because there are loads of people who want to get into fishing but don't know where to start or don't have someone to take them."

David also feels it is vital that local tackle shops play their part and join forces with PAA coaches. He added "My local tackle shop really doesn't help me with any of the events I organise - I don't even get half a pint of maggots from them. I am currently unemployed but I still have to buy any extra equipment myself."

"It's a shame really, as I would love to get involved with a retailer who would put would-be anglers in touch with me. Of course, I would be happy to recommend that shop to them as the place to buy their gear, in return. Seeing the reaction when someone new catches a fish just makes at all worthwhile but I really believe the shops can get involved and get benefits too. We should all be working together to get more people fishing."
